CENTRE – It might not have been the prettiest game one would want to see, but at the end of it the Canton/Galva girls basketball team hung on for a two-point, 32-30 victory over Centre on Tuesday.

In a game that did not have a bunch of points and according to the stats seemed to be played with a lid on the basket for both teams, the Lady Eagles held a slim four-point, 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter before allowing Centre to catch up on the scoreboard and go into the halftime break tied at 13-13.

Coming out of the break, Canton/Galva put up 11 points in the third quarter while holding Centre to seven to take a slim 24-20 advantage. The Lady Eagles then held on in the fourth quarter to earn the razor thin, two-point, 32-30 victory.

“It wasn’t pretty tonight, but the girls found a way to win one on the road which is big for us coming out of the Christmas break,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Shelby Hoppes in his post-game reflections. “Centre did a good job in their box and one, making it hard for Tia (Moddelmog) offensively. We had multiple girls step up and contribute on the offensive end of the floor. Both Emily (Peterson) and Mimi (Craig) played very well in the post and scoring the ball for us.”

When we say it wasn’t pretty, neither team shot very well from the field as Centre hit but 23% of their shots (including one-for-thirteen from beyond the three-point arc) while the Lady Eagles only connected on 25% of their shots.

Emily Peterson led the Lady Eagles with eight points and eight rebounds (including four on the offensive boards) while Tia Moddelmog chipped in with seven and both Jayci Mastre and Mimi Craig each scored five. Carissa Klatt helped Peterson in the paint by pulling down six rebounds.

Coach Hoppes concluded his reflections by adding, “As usual the girls played extremely well on the defensive end of the floor. Holding a good shooting team to just 30 points on 23% shooting. It’ll be nice to get back home now on Friday and try to make it two wins in a row.”

With the razor thin victory, the Lady Eagles are now 3-4 on the season and will return to the hardwood on Friday when they travel to Goessel.
