BRUMBAUGH, HAXTON LEAD OFFENSE!

LINDSBORG – Despite some struggles at the free throw line and shooting, the Smoky Valley girls basketball team returned from the Christmas break to score a home court victory on Tuesday by taking down Hoisington 44-40.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to a five-point, 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter before being outscored by Hoisington 15-9 in the second period and falling behind by one at 22-21 going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Smoky Valley doubled up Hoisington in points, 16-8, in the third quarter to enter the final eight minutes of play holding a seven-point, 37-30 advantage. While Hoisington outscored the Lady Vikings once again in the final quarter, 10-7, they held on for the four-point, 44-40 win.

“I was pleased with our intensity overall but really struggled to shoot the ball at times, especially from the free throw line,” noted Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “I hope that was just rust from the Christmas break. I promise we practiced those things over the break. Our defensive intensity was improved although we gave up too many offensive rebounds. All in all, even if it wasn’t as pretty as we would like, a win is still better than a loss.”

Leading the Lady Vikings on offense were Ellie Brumbaugh and Kerington Haxton who each hit double digits in the scorebook with 12 points each. Breanna Priddy came oh so close to a double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SMOKY VALLEY LADY VIKINGS?

With the victory, the Lady Vikings evened their season record at 3-3 as they now have a week to prep for their next competitive action on the hardwood on Tuesday, January 14, with a road trip to Hesston.
