MOUNDRIDGE – On Tuesday, the Moundridge boys basketball team used a strong first three quarters to pull away from visiting Marion and score a 31-point, 64-33 home court victory.

A bit of a struggle in the first quarter found the Wildcats only leading by five at 17-12 before dropping in 19 points in the second period while holding Marion to just 13 to earn an 11-point, 36-25 advantage going into the halftime break.

It was all Moundridge coming out of the break as they scored 21 points while holding Marion to just three, giving the Wildcats a huge 57-28 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play and then getting the final 31-point victory.

“We got off to a sloppy start tonight but found a way to close out the first half with a run of steals for some quick and easy baskets, including a big back-to-back 3’s by Logan Churchill,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau during his post-game reflections. “Then we came out after halftime and left no doubt with more steals for fast break baskets.”

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Brady Helms who scored a double-double by putting 21 points in the scorebook while also dominating inside the paint with 11 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds. Logan Churchill and Corbin Unruh also reached double digits in scoring for the game with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Wildcats put up some impressive team stats as 12 of the teams 26 rebounds came on the offensive end of the game, while on defense they forced Marion into 24 turnovers which included 17 steals of which eight Wildcats had at least one.

Coach Unrau concluded his reflections by adding, “We are open this Friday so it will give us an opportunity to continue to work on things defensively that need attention. It will also allow us to continue to refine our offense and get people to work to our strengths to be more efficient in the half court.”

With the victory, the Wildcats raise their season record to 3-5. As Coach Unrau noted, they do not play on Friday and will return to the competitive hardwood next Tuesday, January 14 when they make a road trip to Remington.
