MCPHERSON – It was a good night for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball teams as both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams scored victories at home on Thursday over Salina South.

The 7th grade ‘A’ team remained unbeaten at 7-0 for the season by scoring a 10-point, 24-14 victory over Salina South.

Hayden Hoxie led the team in scoring with 10 while Gabe Pyle chipped in with six.

“You would think that after how we came out against Newton before the break that we wouldn’t overlook teams,” explained 7th grade Junior Pup Head Coach Tyler Brown. “But I felt that’s what several of our players did today! They assumed that since we won big the first time that we would just walk over them the second time and that was not the case. The Salina South coaches came out with a terrific game plan and we were not ready. We were not aggressive getting to the paint and penetrating gaps off the dribble and almost seem scared to shoot the ball at times.”

Coach Brown finished up his game reflections by adding, “With Bishop (Brown) sitting a good portion of the first half I felt that hurt us with our aggressiveness and physicality. We had our all-time lows for quarters throughout the game. We only scored five points in the first quarter and just four in the second and fourth quarters. If it wasn’t for Hayden (Hoxie) knocking down some three pointers in the third quarter and Gabe (Pyle) hitting one as well, we would have been in some serious trouble. But once we were able to get up by six points at the end of the third quarter, we were able to take South out of their game and were able to play our type of basketball. Hopefully after a second scare this team will start to learn that you just can’t overlook anyone.”

The 7th grade Junior Pup ‘B’ team scored their second win of the season by dominating Salina South with a 31-point, 43-12, victory. The ‘B’ team has lost four games.

Offensively the Junior Pup ‘B’ team was led by three players who reached double digits in the scorebook, led by Brenden Doile with 14, Alex Harms who had 13 and Jaxson Malvo who finished the game with 11.

“I thought the ‘B’ team got out to a really quick start tonight,” said ‘B’ team Coach Paul Reichenberger. “Our defensive intensity finally picked up as our steals led to easy buckets on the other end. I thought Jaxson (Malvo) had another great game while Brenden (Doile) and Brody (Seidl) did a great job getting everyone involved. Alex (Harms) was a beast inside and continued his solid play. I hope this win helps the boys see how good they can be if they continue to play solid defense and come together as a team.”

The 7th grade Junior Pups will be back on the competitive hardwood next Thursday, January 16, when they host Hutchinson.

7TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING (24 total points): Hayden Hoxie – 10; Gabe Pyle – 6; Ian Razak – 3; Bishop Brown – 2; Brenden Doile – 2; Carter Allen -1.
