KANITZ, WEDEL, BOESE LEAD SCORING!
MCPHERSON – The McPherson Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball teams scored a pair of wins at home on Thursday over Salina South.
8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM REMAINS UNBEATEN!
The ‘A’ team remained unbeaten at 8-0 by scoring a seven-point, 51-44 victory over Salina South.
Eight players put points in the scorebook with Kreighton Kanitz leading the team with 13 while Gavin Wedel scored 10 and both Cory Muehler and Owen Pyle just missed double digits with nine and eight points respectively.
“We got off to a really good start by coming out with good energy and were able to get into the paint while creating shots for each other,” said 8th grade Head Coach Jay Crawford. “We were playing at the pace we like and our defense at times was very good. We were able to turn them over and that lead us to getting out into the open court. But we then struggled keeping the ball in front of us at times and we fouled way too much. South made like 15-of-18 free throws which kept them in the game. We did push the score up to 51-33 and we did not play well after that as we continued to foul. South continued to step to the line and knock down the shots. We have not fouled like this all season so we will work in practice on guarding better and moving our feet and stop reaching.”
Coach Crawford concluded his game reflections by saying, “This groups record last season was 15-1 and that one loss was to Hutchinson, who we will play next and I know that we are really looking forward to playing them next. They are excited to play them at the community building. I believe our practices are going to be really good and our focus will on point.”
8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM WINS BY 9!
The Junior Pup ‘B’ team raised their season mark to 5-3 by earning a nine-point, 36-27 victory.
Nine players put points on the scoreboard during the game with Henry Boese being the only one to reach double digits with 10 while Owen Fetsch just missed double digits with nine.
‘B’ team Coach Grant Barrett reflected on the game by saying, “We’ve been talking about how important it is to get off to a good start all season. The guys needed no extra motivation knowing it was going to be their last game at McPherson Middle School. We did a great job with our press defense, constantly throwing new bodies at them. It was a great team win that every individual had a part in contributing in.”
