ALEXANDER, PYLE, WEDEL ALL HIT DOUBLE DIGITS!

MCPHERSON – A strong first quarter helped propel the McPherson Middle School eighth-grade boys ‘A’ team basketball to a decisive 17-point, 52-35 win at home over rival Hutchinson on Thursday.

The Junior Pups jumped out to a commanding 15-4 first quarter lead and never let up to gain the victory and remain unbeaten for the season at 9-0.

Javyn Alexander had a huge night as he led the Junior Pups in scoring with 16 while Owen Pyle and Gavin Wedel also put double digits by their names in the scorebook by scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.

“I am very proud of our team,” explained eighth-grade Junior Pup Head Coach Jay Crawford. “The toughness in which they played with and how they stuck together and really competed for each other. We knew Hutchinson would come in with a lot of confidence because of their one win against this team last season. We really came out and started the game well. Because of that loss from last season, this group really wanted to prove they were the better team.”

Coach Crawford concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “I knew Hutchinson would make a run at us and to see my team just battle through those tough moments and play physical and not back down was great to see. This was truly a big win for us and it showed our players that when we speak to them about playing with a toughness and championship mind set, it really separates good teams from others. This group played with great effort and that is all we ask them to do.”

The eighth-grade Junior Pup ‘B’ team did not have as good a day on the court as they were humbled by Hutchinson to the tune of a 38-12 loss.

Owen Fetsch was strong for the Junior Pups as he scored nine of the teams twelve points.

“We were stuck in a scoring rut for about half of the game,” noted ‘B’ team Coach Grant Barrett in his post-game reflections. “Hutchinson played a zone and packed it around the paint which made it difficult for us to get the ball inside. Owen (Fetsch) shot the ball for us well tonight.”
