JOHNSON TOPS TEUTON SCORING!
BURRTON – Playing in the first round of the Burrton Basketball Tournament on Monday, the Inman boys basketball team nearly let the game slip away from them before hanging on to bring home a one-point, 46-45 victory over Central Christian.
With the victory the Teutons will now enter the winner’s bracket and return on Thursday to Burrton to take on number one seeded Berean Academy, a team that handed the Teutons a 29-point loss early this season.
As for the game with Central Christian, the Teutons pushed out to an early five-point, 10-5, lead after the first quarter and then held an eight-point, 19-11 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, Central Christian dropped in 20 points in the third quarter while holding Inman to just 13 to pull within one-point heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Teutons were able to hold on to the lead as both teams scored 14 points each in the fourth quarter, but Inman came out with the one-point, 46-45 win.
“We hung on and won tonight,” explained relieved Teuton Head Coach Brett Froese in his post-game reflections. “Thought we looked a little lethargic to start the game. Central Christian played super hard and the game was more physical tonight than what we have been used to. They did a good job of trying to keep us out of transition play tonight. I thought we really kind of gutted it out and I am proud of them for being able to close it out.”
Thanks to connecting on three three-pointers, Derick Johnson led the Teutons in scoring with 14 while Eli Brunk and Jace Doerksen each hit for eight.
Coach Froese concluded his reflections by giving credit where credit was due for some players while also looking to the rematch in the upcoming tournament semifinal matchup, saying, “(Jace) Doerksen and (Derick) Johnson came up big tonight while Eli (Brunk) was really good for us in the first half. We play Berean Academy on Thursday, so we got to figure out how to make up for the 29 points which they shellacked us by the last time we played them.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE TEUTONS?
Now 7-2 for the season, the Teutons will return to Burrton on Thursday for their semi-final matchup with top seed and unbeaten Berean Academy. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
