SHOOTING WOES HURT SMOKY VALLEY!

By William

STERLING – While hoping to jump start a winning streak on the road at the Sterling Basketball Tournament, the Smoky Valley boys’ basketball team could not overcome shooting woes and lost in their first-round matchup with host Sterling, 57-35.

The Black Bears jumped out early on the Vikings, gaining a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and then pushing their advantage out to 19 points at 32-13 heading into the halftime break.

Smoky Valley continued to struggle in the third quarter as Sterling pushed their lead out to 30 points by the end of the third quarter before the Vikings were able to nibble a few points off before finishing with the 22-point loss.

Shooting was a struggle throughout the first half for the Vikings as they hit just 26% of their shots compared to Sterling connecting on 54%. While Smoky Valley upped their percentage to 45 in the final two quarters, overall, they shot just 35% for the game. The Vikings also connected on just one of ten three-point attempts while the Black Bears hit five of twelve from beyond the arc.

No, a single Viking took the lead on offense as they had no player score in double digits but had eight players put points in the scorebook led by Trey Kennedy with seven and Cade Schneider with six while five other Vikings scored four points each.

The Vikings also did not have an answer for the Black Bears Tyus Wilson who hit for a double-double by scoring 20 points while dominating under the boards with 12 rebounds.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS?

With the loss, the Vikings drop to just 2-6 for the season as they return to Sterling on Tuesday to play in the consolation bracket of the Sterling Tournament at 4:00 p.m. against Russell who lost to Lyons.
