GOESSEL – In a makeup game from one cancelled last week, the Canton/Galva girls’ basketball team dominated play in paint and scored a big road victory on Tuesday when they traveled south and took a nine-point, 45-36 win over Goessel.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early seven-point, 15-8 lead by the end of the first quarter only to see Goessel push back and outscore Canton/Galva 11-4 in the second quarter to make the game tied at 19-19 heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, the Lady Eagles put together a consistent second half by scoring 13 points in each of the final two quarters while holding the host team to just seven in the third and ten in the fourth, giving them the final nine-point victory.

When looking at the stats it would almost seem amazing that the Lady Eagles won the game considering they shot just 23% from the field for the game. But that was just one side of the story as Canton/Galva dominated the play in the paint and under the basket by hauling down 36 rebounds, which included a whopping 21 offensive or second chance rebounds, to Goessel’s 26. The stat difference came in turnovers as the Lady Eagles took care of the ball with just 10 turnovers while their defense forced Goessel into 19 miscues.

While not putting a single point in the scorebook, Emily Peterson may have been the unsung hero for the Lady Eagles as she dominated the game in the paint by pulling down 11 rebounds, of which eight came on the offensive end giving her team second chance points. Peterson also recorded a blocked shot.

Individually Tia Moddelmog led the Lady Eagles offensive attack by scoring 15, which included three three-pointers while dishing out four assists. Carissa Klatt just missed double digits with nine points, all on three-pointers, while Mimi Craig chipped in with eight.

With The victory the Lady Eagles raised their season record to 4-5 as they now prep for an appearance next Tuesday in the 40th Annual Steve Shepherd Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament in Sedgwick. The Lady Eagles first-round opponent will be TIS (The Independent School) who are 6-4 for the season.
