ANDERSON LEADS EAGLES IN SCORING!

By William

LOST SPRING – Tuesday was an outstanding day for the Elyria Christian boys’ basketball team as they hit the road to play at the Centre Cougar Basketball Classic and literally rolled over Marion for a 26-point, 44-18 victory.

The victory now pits the Eagles against Peabody/Burns in the tournament’s semifinals on Friday.

Elyria jumped on the Warriors early by taking a 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and then shutting down the Marion offense in the second quarter by holding them to zero points while putting nine more on the board and taking a commanding 20-point, 23-3 advantage into the halftime break.

Marion came out a played some ball in the third quarter, but the Eagles still put up 15 points to the Warriors 12 to take a 38-15 lead into the final eight minutes of play as they cruised in for the 26-point win.

“It is exciting to see the joy in a young team learning how to play together,” noted Eagle Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “We have had plenty of practice with the postponement of games, and I believe we have really benefited from that. It was our first game in few days, and I was not sure how we would respond after some quality practices. I was extremely proud of the boy’s effort and attention to details.”

Nine Eagles put at least a pair of points in the scorebook with Bret Anderson leading the way with 12 while Jackson Stone chipped in with eight and Zach Stucky hit for seven. Gage Schneider and Anderson held the Eagles steady under the basket as they pulled down eight and seven rebounds each.

“I thought we shared the ball well as we finished the game with nine assists and we did a better job of taking care of the basketball,” continued Coach Goodrich with his post-game reflections. Defensively, we were moving in and out of help and doing a better job of contesting shots. Bret (Anderson) and Jackson (Stone) led us in scoring tonight and we were able to find openings against the Marion zone defense. I thought they were more aggressive and have learned to pick their spots. That has been one of our emphasizes the last two weeks was finding the right shot and I thought we did a good job of that. Gage (Schneider) and Bret were huge on the boards and I was pleased with their effort on that end.”

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections by adding, “We still have a lot to learn and getting healthy will help us along the way. It was fun to see Jackson (Stone) back on the court and getting back into rhythm.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE ELYRIA CHRISTIAN EAGLES?
