KENNEDY CONNECTS ON 7 3-POINTERS!

By William

STERLING – The Smoky Valley boys basketball team needed an uplift after losing Monday in the first round of the Sterling Basketball Invitational and they got it from Trey Kennedy who exploded for 33 points in their consolation matchup with Russell on Tuesday, propelling the Vikings to a 27-point, 70-43 victory.

Smoky Valley jumped on Russell early by taking a 14-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and then extending that advantage out to 19 points at 33-14 going into the halftime break.

It did seem that Russell found a little groove to their offense in the second half, the Vikings pushed their advantage out to 23 points at 49-26 by the end of the third quarter before they settled in for the final 27-point margin of victory.

While eight Vikings put points in the scorebook for the game, it was Trey Kennedy who had seemed to be hitting everything he shot as he connected on 12-of-16 from the field, including seven-of-ten three-pointers, and added two free throws to score a whopping 33 points overall. Johann Rauchholz and Cade Schneider joined Kennedy in double digits by each chipping in with 10. Matt Lucas was the Viking getting the work done in the paint as he led the team in rebounding with 10 while Haven Lysell-Stewart grabbed six and Cade Schneider nabbed five.

It was a true team effort as the Vikings recorded 18 assists on offense while forcing Russell into 18 turnovers. Smoky Valley also did well to get second chances when on offense as 13 of their 34 rebounds came on the offensive end of the court.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS?

With the win the Vikings are now 3-6 for the season and will return to Sterling on Friday to play for fifth place in the 48th Annual Sterling Boys Basketball Invitational against the winner of Thursday’s contest between Kingman and SE of Saline.
