KAUFMAN, HELMS, SCHLOSSER LEAD WILDCATS!

By William

CANTON – Since an early season struggle to find victories, the Moundridge boys basketball team continues to turn the season around as they scored a 15-point, 50-35 victory over Bennington on Tuesday in the first round of the Canton/Galva Boys Basketball Invitational.

The win is the Wildcats fourth in a row and now evens their season mark out at 5-5.

Jumping out early was a key for the Wildcats as they earned an 11-point, 20-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and then kept it up and pushed the advantage out to 14 points at halftime when they took a 31-17 lead into the break.

Moundridge continued to pull away in the third quarter and entered the final quarter of play holding a 20-point, 42-22 advantage. Bennington worked on a bit of a run in the final eight minutes of play but were unable to get any closer than the final 15-point deficit.

“We had multiple opportunities to put the game out of reach but failed to capitalize especially at the free throw line,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “We weren’t sharp tonight and I’m not surprised because we didn’t practice well last night. We have got to get more focused as I though several of our guys didn’t play hard tonight, but that will change.”

The victory was a team effort as several Wildcats stepped up to have solid games, including Landon Kaufman who led the team in scoring with 13 while also getting four steals on defense. Brady Helms chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds while Logan Churchill hit three three-pointers to just miss double digits with nine points. Jon Schlosser was a monster in the paint as he pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with the team leading four assists he dished out.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE MOUNDRIDGE WILDCATS?

With the win the Wildcats are now back even at 5-5 for the season as they prep to return to the Canton/Galva Tournament for their semifinal matchup with Prep Life at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
