CANTON – From the opening tip on Thursday, the Canton/Galva boys’ basketball team was in charge as they dismantled Ell-Saline by 36-points, 66-33, in their consolation bracket game for the Canton/Galva Tournament.

With the victory the Eagles are now 4-6 for the season and will play again Friday for fifth place against Wichita Classical who beat Bennington 55-52 on Thursday.

The Eagles ran out to a 15-point, 22-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 24 points at 39-15 by the time the two teams headed for the halftime break.

While Ell-Saline did find a little offense in the third quarter, Canton/Galva still held a 28-point lead going into the final quarter of play where they cruised in for the final 36-point, 69-33 victory.

“Our defensive pressure really set the tone to start the game,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan. “We came out with a lot of intensity and urgency. They were forced into an uncomfortable pace and we were able to capitalize off their turnovers.”

The Eagle defense held Ell-Saline to a measly 27% shooting from the field while the Eagles connected on 43% of their whopping 68 shots taken. Canton/Galva also held a huge advantage in the paint area as they pulled down an unbelievable 52 rebounds in the game compared to just 29 for Ell-Saline. Of those 52 rebounds, the Eagles grabbed 23 on the offensive end of the court which many times played out to second-chance points.

As for individuals, the Eagles earned a monster game from Tyson Struber who hit for 13 points while getting a double-double by grabbing 18 rebounds, plus handing out four assists, making a pair of steals on defense and blocking three shots.

While Brayden Collins led the Eagles in scoring with 17, he just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and blocking three shots.

Xavier Westbrook joined Collins and Struber in double digits with 10 points while Andrew Prieb just missed with nine as 10 Eagle players put at least a pair of points in the scorebook.

Coach Duncan concluded his post-game reflections by building up his top players of the game and saying, “Tyson (Struber) absolutely controlled the paint by getting 15 rebounds in the first half alone and keeping Ell-Saline from ever getting an open look in the paint. Brayden (Collins) had his best game of the season and I felt he was very aggressive getting to the rim off the dribble.”
