CANTON – Despite a solid night of shooting and rebounding, the Moundridge boys’ basketball team was unable to overcome the size and quickness of Wichita Life Prep Academy on Thursday and lost by seven, 68-61 in their semifinal game of the Canton/Galva Basketball Tournament.

With the loss the Wildcats fall back below .500 on the season at 5-6 but will have an opportunity to even the record again on Friday when they will return to Canton to battle Sedgwick for third place in the tournament. Sedgwick lost on Thursday, 58-43 to the Wichita Home School Warriors.

Moundridge fell behind by six at 17-11 as the first quarter ended but were able to play Life Prep even in the second quarter as each team scored 16 to only be down by six at the halftime break.

It was a tale of two quarters in the second half as Life Prep outscored the Wildcats 20-14 in the third quarter to take a 12-point, 53-41 advantage into the final eight minutes of play. While Moundridge was able to outscore Life Prep 20-15 in the final quarter it was not enough to erase the deficit and they ended up losing by seven.

“Life Prep Academy is about as athletic a group as we will see this season,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “The had size, quickness and good shooters. I thought we executed at the offensive end and got the looks that we wanted, we just didn’t always finish, and we had too many untimely turnovers. We played hard and the kids did what we asked them to do, what more can you ask. We will bring it again tomorrow to secure two wins on the week.”

While both teams had a fairly hot hand shooting with the Wildcats hit on 57% attempts from the field while Life Prep connected on 52% of what they put up, it was from beyond the arc that proved to be the difference as Moundridge hit just one-of-six attempts while Life Prep buried 11-of-23.

Individually the Wildcats were led on offense by Brady Helms who put 18 points in the scorebook while Jonathon Schlosser was right behind him with 17 and Corbin Unruh hit for 11. Landon Kaufman almost made it four Wildcats in double digits as he just missed with nine.
