STRUBER HAS ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE!

By William

CANTON – The Canton/Galva boys basketball team tried valiantly to win the final game of their own tournament on Friday, but a scoring splurge in the third quarter by Wichita Classical proved to be too much and the Eagles dropped an 11 point, 51-40 game to finish sixth at their 46th Annual Canton/Galva Boys Basketball Tournament.

It was deadlocked at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter before Wichita Classical edged out to a three-point, 22-19 lead heading into the halftime break. Coming out in the third quarter, the Eagles defense let their guard down and Wichita Classical put up 16 points to the Eagles 10 to take a comfortable 38-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

While the Eagles played Wichita Classical nose-to-nose in the final eight minutes, they were unable to nip away at the deficit and lost by 11.

“We played pretty well in that first quarter,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan. “We had way too many rushed shots and unforced turnovers in the middle quarters. I was proud of the effort tonight as we played hard. Unfortunately, we just didn’t hit enough of our open looks.”

In all three games of the tournament, the Eagles Tyson Struber has been near unstoppable as he scored his third double-double of the week by putting 18 points in the scorebook while pulling down 16 rebounds plus he dished out three assists while having a blocked shot and a steal on defense. Kinser Colgin joined Struber in double digits with 11 as only four Eagles put points in the scorebook during the game.

Speaking of Struber, Coach Duncan concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Once again, Tyson (Struber) played really, really well! He had a great week, putting up double-doubles in each game as he averaged 16 points and 14.5 rebounds per contest, all the while shooting a solid 55% from the field. Somehow, inexplicably, he was left off the all-tournament team.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANTON/GALVA EAGLES?

The loss drops the Canton/Galva Eagles to 4-7 for the season as they prep to play Goessel on the road on Tuesday, January 28.
