CANTON – One thing you can say about the third-place game on Friday at the 46th Annual Canton/Galva Boys Basketball Tournament, both teams played with consistency with the Moundridge boys coming up on the short end, losing by 15, 54-39 to Sedgwick.

The loss placed the Wildcats fourth overall for the tournament.

Moundridge scored nine points in each of the first two quarters of play while Sedgwick put 13 points on the scoreboard in each of those same two periods, giving them a 26-18 lead heading into the halftime break.

While the Wildcats increased their points per quarter to 10 in the third and 11 in the fourth, Sedgwick scored 14 in each quarter to hand the Wildcats the final 15-point, 54-39 defeat.

“We struggled offensively tonight primarily because of the physicality of the game,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau during his post-game reflections. “Sedgwick displaced us too much posting up and on dribble penetration. It’s something we can learn from and make the adjustments. Disappointed that we couldn’t get two wins this week, but big game lay ahead so we will do what it takes to get better.”

They consistency of the two teams showed up in the stat sheet as well, as both teams shot 43% from the field while the Wildcats hit on 61% of their free throws and Sedgwick connected on 66%. Even rebounding was close as Moundridge recorded 24 and Sedgwick had 21, with both teams getting nearly the same production from the bench as the Wildcats scored 12 points off the bench and Sedgwick hit for 11.

Offensively, Moundridge only had five players put points in the scorebook and three of them, Brady Helms, Landon Kaufman, and Corbin Unruh, tied for the team lead with 12.

The Wildcats are not just 5-7 on the season as they prep to return to the competitive court on Friday, January 31 when they tangle with Goessel.
