Traffic Stop Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department

This Tuesday they are talking about ‘Yielding to Emergency Vehicles’.

Picture this, you are peacefully driving along, when the quiet is broken by the wail of a siren and flashing lights in your rear-view mirror.

You only have a few seconds to react.

DO YOU KNOW what you are required to do?

React by carefully moving over to your right.

Don’t panic and freeze as this only increases the potential for a collision.

In brief:

Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO) 61 (a) states – upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle making use of an audible and visual signal or police vehicle properly and lawfully marked making use of an audible signal only, the driver of every other vehicle shall do the following:

  • First yield to the right-of-way
  • Immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersections
  • Stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed.

01-28-2020 Emergency Vehicle Law

To help our Officers and other First Responders avoid traffic accidents and delays as they are responding to an emergency, please yield the right-of-way to them.

Enjoy your week and please drive safety.
