GREAT BEND – Despite holding a small lead through the first three quarters, the Little River girls’ basketball team faltered in the final eight minutes of play on Thursday at the Hilltop Basketball Classic in Great Bend where they lost by 10, 42-32, to St. John.

The two teams were knotted at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter before the Lady Redskins were able to pull out ahead by three at 20-17 heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Little River added one more point to their advantage the third quarter and went into the final eight minutes of play holding a four-point, 29-25 lead. Unfortunately, St. John took advantage of turnovers and fouls in the final quarter of play to outscore the Lady Redskins 17-3 and ended up pulling out the victory by 10.

While neither team shot better than 36% from the field, St. John put up 31 free throw attempts to Little River only had nine dues to the Lady Redskins committing 23 personal fouls. Not surprisingly the 17-7 edge in made free throws by St. John is exactly what they ended up with as the margin of victory.

The Lady Redskins outrebounded St. John by seven, 31-24 but at the same time turned the ball over 28 times to just 18 by St. John.

Individually, while eight Lady Redskins put points in the scorebook for the evening, none reached double digits as Lead Ayers led the way with eight while Emma McBride had six.

Even though St. John held Little River’s Lily Boughfman in check on the scoreboard as she only scored five, Boughfman did have a strong game in the paint with nine rebounds and two blocked shots, while McBride and Morgan Konen had the strong defensive games with three steals each.

The loss drops the Lady Redskins to 6-5 for the season as they now prep for a battle with Ness City on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for third place at the Hilltop Basketball Classic in Great Bend. Ness City lost on Thursday to the number one team in the state in Class 1A, Central Plains, 96-17.
