GOESSEL – Despite going scoreless in the second quarter, the Moundridge boys’ basketball team used a huge first and fourth quarter to score a six-point, 51-45 victory over Goessel on the road on Friday.

The Wildcats jumped on Goessel by scoring 23 first quarter points while holding the home team to just 13, giving them a comfortable 10-point advantage after just eight minutes of play which was good as both teams struggled on offense in the second quarter with Moundridge going scoreless but still able to hold a 23-15 lead heading to the halftime break.

In the final two quarters the Wildcats pushed out to a 14-point lead at one point before allowing Goessel to nip away at it to the final six-point victory.

“We led start to finish but made it interesting late as we let a 14-point lead dwindle down to the final victory margin of six,” noted Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “I thought the kids played hard but made some silly defensive plays that cost us some easy baskets for them and giving up 13 offensive rebounds is inexcusable. Goessel has a nice team. It is good to get a win on the road. We will have to be on our ‘A’ game next week at Sterling as they have a lot of weapons.”

One benefit for the Wildcats was their shooting on the night as they connected on 49% of their field goals and 80% of their free throws, while playing as a team as they recorded 14 assists on 18 made shots for the game.

Moundridge only had five players put points in the scorebook with three of them hitting for double digits as Landon Kaufman had the team high of 16 while Jonathon Schlosser and Brady Helms hit for 14 and 12 respectively. Helms and Schlosser both just missed a double-double as they also recorded nine and eight rebounds each.

With the victory the Wildcats pull within one game of an even overall record at 5-6. Moundridge will be back on the court next Tuesday when they travel to Sterling.
