MODDELMOG HAS HUGE TOURNAMENT!

SEDGWICK – From a first game demolition to a big victory to a heartbreaking loss, the Canton/Galva girls’ basketball team felt it all over their three games at the Sedgwick Girls Basketball Tournament as they went 1-2 and finished sixth in the three-day event.

On Thursday the Lady Eagles were hammered 58-27 by Wichita Independent before bouncing back on Friday to take a solid 15-point, 42-27 victory over Chaparral and then finishing up the Sedgwick Tournament with a heart breaking one-point, late game loss to Belle Plaine to finish sixth overall.

With the one win and two losses, the Lady Eagles are now 5-7 for the season and will press forward with a game on Tuesday, February 4 when they play host to Solomon.

CANTON/GALVA LADY EAGLES vs. Wichita Independent

In the Canton/Galva opening game of the Sedgwick Tournament, they held a one-point, 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before Wichita Independent poured 25 points on the board in the second quarter while holding the Lady Eagles to just a pair of points to take a commanding 34-12 advantage into the halftime break. After the break Wichita Independent outscored the Lady Eagles 24-15 to gain the 31-point win.

No team or individual stats or individual scoring were available for this game.

CANTON/GALVA LADY EAGLES vs. Chaparral

On Friday the Lady Eagles defense came to life as they held Chaparral to zero points in the first quarter while scoring six. In the second quarter Chaparral outscored the Lady Eagles 11-10 but Canton/Galva still held a five-point, 16-11 advantage going into the halftime break.

The Lady Eagles came out and scored 13 points in each of the final two quarters while Chaparral only scored eight in each, giving the Lady Eagles the final 15-point, 42-27 victory.

Tia Moddelmog had a big game against Chaparral as she led the Lady Eagles with 20 points while also pulling down seven rebounds, hitting two three-pointers, dishing out five assists, making three steals and blocking a shot. Alexa Bell also had a strong game as she just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

CANTON/GALVA LADY EAGLES vs. Belle Plaine

            In the game for sixth-place in the tournament, the Lady Eagles slipped behind Belle Plaine 18-15 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring Belle Plaine 13-3 in the second quarter to take a seven-point, 28-21 advantage as the two teams headed into the halftime break.

Belle Plaine nipped one point off the lead by the end of the third quarter, before outscoring the Lady Eagles 17-10 in the final eight minutes of play to take the heartbreaking, one-point, late-game 50-49 win.

Both teams had nearly the same success shooting as the Lady Eagles hit on 39% of their shots while Belle Plaine connected on 38%. Canton/Galva had a slight 19-18 advantage in rebounding but found the damage done to the lead in their ball handling as the Lady Eagles committed 24 turnovers to just 14 for Belle Plaine.

For the second game in a row, Tia Moddlemog had a monster game as she poured in 31 points which included four three-pointers, pulled down five rebounds and made five steals on defense. Alexa Bell was the only other Lady Eagle with much success on offense as she scored 14 points for the second game in a row.
