KAUFMAN, EICHELBERGER, STUCKY LEAD MOUNDRIDGE!
HAVEN – The Moundridge girls basketball team finished up their play at the Haven Tournament on Friday and Saturday with a pair of losses to a pair of top teams in Garden Plain and Rose Hill.
On Friday, shooting was a major struggle and it cost the Lady Wildcats as they tumbled to Garden Plain 50-21.
Come Saturday, the Moundridge girls nearly pulled a major comeback and upset of Rose Hill before falling by three at 48-45 despite a double-double from Kate Eichelberger and unbelievable shooting night from Kourtney Kaufman. The loss placed the Lady Wildcats in eighth place for the final tournament standings.
With the two losses the Lady Wildcats are now just 6-7 for the season and will return to the competitive court on Tuesday, February 4 when they travel to Sterling.
Here is a brief on each game plus team stats and individual scoring and stat leaders:
MOUNDRIDGE LADY WILDCATS vs. Garden Plain
After holding their own in the first quarter against a powerful Garden Plain team, trailing by just three at 11-8, the Lady Wildcats faltered and struggled connecting on their shots and scored just 13 more points in the game as Garden Plain scored a 50-21 win over Moundridge.
“We had a great first quarter against a top ranked Garden Plain team,” noted Lady Wildcat Head Coach Vicky Kessler. “But in the final three quarters we struggled to put the ball in the basket as Garden Plain’s defense made it difficult to move the ball and find the open shot.”
The Lady Wildcats shot just 22% from the field and missed all 15 attempts from beyond the arc. Outside of their 21 turnovers, Moundridge held their own with Garden Plain as they even had a 32-31 edge in rebounds.
Despite seven Lady Wildcats scoring, only Erin Durst hit for five.

MOUNDRIDGE LADY WILDCATS vs. Rose Hill
In the final game of the Invitational for the Lady Wildcats, they battle nose-to-nose with Rose Hill, leading by two at the end of the first quarter before hitting a shooting slump and giving Rose Hill an opportunity to jump out to a comfortable 24-14 lead heading into the halftime break.
While Rose Hill outscored Moundridge in the third quarter 17-13 to take a 14 point advantage into the final eight minutes of play, the Lady Wildcats did not give up and fought hard by out gunning the Lady Rockets 17-7 in the final quarter but still coming up short in the final by just three points.
“The girls were in a battle throughout the game with Rose Hill,” explained Coach Kessler as she finished her reflections on the weekend. “In the second quarter when Kate (Eichelberger) got her third foul and had to go to the bench, Rose Hill took advantage of that and outscored us by 11. In the fourth quarter we battled back from a 13-point deficit to pull within two. Unfortunately, we had to foul at the end of the game, and they connected at the free throw line. The girls never quit in this game and I was extremely proud of how hard they battled.”
While Kourtney Kaufman, who scored zero points against Garden Plain, led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 21 points thanks to five three-pointers, it was Kate Eichelberger who had the huge game as she recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Stucky had another consistent game as she may have only scored two points, but she also had three assists and matched her rebound total from each of the first two games at Haven by pulling down five.
