MCBRIDE SCORES GAME WINNING SHOT!

By William

GREAT BEND – On Friday evening the Little River girls’ basketball team worked through a gut-wrenching overtime game with Ness City to get a 33-31 victory and third place at the Hilltop Classic Girls Basketball Tournament.

Little River scored 10 points in each of the first two quarters while Ness City hit for eight and six, giving the Lady Redskins a six-point, 20-14 advantage as the two teams headed for the halftime break.

Offensive lapses frustrated the Lady Redskins in the final two quarters allowing Ness City to pull back within one at 24-23 by the end of the third quarter and then tie the game at 29-29 by the end of regulation time when Jaylie Bergkamp took an offensive board only to have her put back shot blocked as time ran out.

A pass from Morgan Konen to Emma McBride, enabling her to put up a nice left-handed floater at the buzzer that went through the net to give the Lady Redskins the two-point, 33-31 win and third place in the Hilltop Classic.

“What a finish,” exclaimed Lady Redskin Head Coach Trey Look. “That was a fun game to be part of. Frustrating at times, but the girls fought hard and were able to get the win.”

Lily Boughfman and McBride led Little River in scoring with 12 and 11 points respectively, with Boughfman nearly getting a double-double with nine rebounds. While Leah Ayers did not put any points in the scorebook, she played an important key in the game with her defense as she recorded two blocked shots and made four steals.

Neither team had a great game shooting as they both connected on just 31% of their shots, though Little River dominated the paint as they outrebounded Ness City 38-27.

Coach Look concluded his post-game reflections by saying, I thought we did great defensively and were being sound in our assignments. We rebounded well and were able to get some early baskets against their press. We had another lapse in the fourth quarter which allowed them to tie the game. We did struggle at taking care of the ball and hitting free throws which allowed them to stay in the game. I am proud of the girls and their fight to tonight.”

MCBRIDE, BOUGHFMAN EARN CLASSIC HONORS!

On top of making the game winning shot against Ness City, Emma McBride also won the Hilltop Classic three-point competition.

Lily Boughfman made the all-tournament team.
