BRUMBAUGH LEADS SMOKY VALLEY!
LINDSBORG – In a defensive battle, the Smoky Valley girls’ basketball team held a slim lead into the final quarter before seeing it slip away as they ended up losing late, 30-27, to Hillsboro in a home battle on Tuesday.
Trailing by three, 5-2, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Vikings outscored the visitors 9-5 in the second eight minutes of play to take a slim one-point, 11-10 advantage going into the halftime break.
With both teams putting six points on the scoreboard in the third quarter, Smoky Valley still held on to their one-point lead going into the final quarter of play where Hillsboro outscored the Lady Vikings 14-10 to end up taking the victory by three late in the game thanks to sinking many free throws.
“The game was back and forth throughout the game, but the Lady Vikings were able to lead at halftime and at the end of the third quarter,” noted Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege in his post-game reflections.
Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings with 12 points, including the team’s only two three-pointers of the game while Breanna Priddy chipped in with eight.
Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections by saying, “Too many empty trips late, along with Hillsboro success at the free throw line made the difference in the fourth quarter. I had a feeling it might be a grind it out, ugly game offensively. We played pretty good man to man defense throughout – well enough to have won. Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish the execution on the offensive end well enough. I asked our girls to push the ball but if the fast break isn’t there, to be patient and they did. It just didn’t end up in enough buckets.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY VIKINGS? The loss drops the Lady Vikings to 0-2 in league play and just 4-9 overall for the season. The Smoky Valley girls have a busy week as they travel to Hoisington on Thursday and then make a trip to Larned on Friday.
