CANTON – If you could take away the second quarter, the Canton/Galva boys basketball team could be boasting of a victory, unfortunately their second quarter struggles cost the Eagles as they lost by 10, 73-63, at home on Tuesday to the Solomon Gorillas.

The Eagles held a slim three-point, 25-22 advantage after a high scoring first quarter only to struggle getting points on the scoreboard in the second quarter, adding just five to their total while the Gorillas dropped in another 18 to give them a 10-point lead going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Canton/Galva poured in 22 points while holding Solomon to just 14, cutting the Gorilla lead to just two points heading into the final eight minutes of play. But once again, the Eagles struggled to get points in the scorebook in the fourth quarter as Solomon did not, giving the Gorillas their final 10-point victory.

Much of the difference came in the paint as the Gorillas outrebounded the Eagles 39-30 for the game, included 16 on their offensive boards which lead to 22 second chance opportunities to the visitors. The Eagles only had nine offensive rebounds in the game.

“Giving up 16 offensive rebounds was the key to the game,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan during his post-game reflections. “When we did keep them in front of us defensively, we didn’t box out on the backside. They also outscored us from the free throw line 18-7 as they hit 18-of-27 while we only connected on 7-of-11.”

Once again Tyson Struber continued to have big games for the Eagles as he poured in 25 points while also getting a double-double with 10 rebounds and making five blocked shots and grabbing three steals while on defense. Also putting in a career high game on offense was Xavier Westbrook who scored 22 while also dishing out five assists, grabbing five rebounds and making five steals on defense.

Coach Duncan concluded his reflections talking about his players, saying, “Tyson (Struber) was efficient tonight, scoring at least five points in each quarter. Xavier (Westbrook) had his career high with 22 points while he also did a great job of attacking the rim. Kinser (Colgin) played a really good second half for us.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANTON/GALVA EAGLES? The loss drops the Eagles to just 4-9 for the season as they now prep to host Rural Vista on Friday.
