MODDELMOG, REBOUNDING LEADS LADY EAGLES!

By William

CANTON – Playing their fourth game in just six days on Tuesday, the Canton/Galva girls basketball team fought through fatigue and won the battle of offensive rebounding to score an eight-point, 44-36 victory at home over Solomon.

After taking a three-point, 8-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles still held a four-point, 20-16 advantage when the two teams headed to the locker rooms for their halftime break.

Canton/Galva came out in the third quarter and doubled their lead out to eight at 28-20 before Solomon played them even without nibbling into the Lady Eagles lead in the final eight minutes of play to give the Lady Eagles the final 44-36 win.

Tia Moddelmog had another huge game for the Lady Eagles, scoring a game high 21 points while also pulling down a team high eight rebounds of which five were on the offensive end of the court. Moddelmog also made Solomon pay on defense as she recorded 10 steals. Alexa Bell joined Moddelmog in double digits with 13 points while both Mimi Craig and Emily Peterson helped the Lady Eagles dominate the boards with seven rebounds each with Braylee Doughman also grabbing six.

As a team, the Lady Eagles only connected on 24% of their shots for the game but at the same time outrebounded Solomon 38-30 which included a whopping 24 offensive boards that turned into 19 second chance points. Another staggering team statistic was the Lady Eagles recorded steals on defense.

“This was our fourth game in six days, and I think we were a little fatigued which showed tonight in our shooting percentage,” explained Shelby Hoppes in his game reflections. “The great thing about this team is even on a bad shooting night, the girls are always going to give great effort, defend and rebound. Defensively we were able to force a lot of turnovers which gave us some much-needed extra possessions.”
