HAWKINSON HAD OVERALL SOLID GAME!

GOESSEL – Using some stingy defense, the Elyria Christian girls’ basketball team scored a comfortable 11-point, 32-21 victory on the road Tuesday at Goessel.

Jumping out to a nine-point, 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter was good for the Lady Eagles as they stumbled in the second quarter, scoring just three points while Goessel knocked down seven points to pull back within five at 16-11 heading into the halftime break.

Elyria Christian found their offense legs again coming out of the break by outscoring Goessel 11-4 in the third quarter to hold a comfortable 12-point, 27-15 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play where they then held on for the final 11-point win.

“The team had a great defensive night holding Goessel to only four made field goals on 29 attempts,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields during his game reflections. “We forced 28 turnovers and had 21 steals. We did struggle at the free throw line, making just 4-of-16 which helped keep Goessel in the game as they made 12-of-19.”

Seven Lady Eagles put points on the scoreboard with Ryland Hawkinson, Olivia Peters and Kylee Penner leading the way by each scoring six. Hawkinson had an exceptional all-around game as she also led the team in rebounds with five, in steals with six, and in blocked shots with two while tying for the team lead in assists with two along with Claire Adamyk and KiLynn Starburg.

While the Lady Eagles did shoot just 33% from the field for the game, Goessel only hit on 14%. Elyria Christian was outrebounded as a team 35-24 which was made up with forcing Goessel into 28 turnovers which included 21 steals.

The Lady Eagles were also victorious in the junior varsity game as they beat Goessel 29-19.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE ELYRIA CHRISTIAN LADY EAGLES? With the victory the Lady Eagles have brought their season record to the .500 level at 7-7. They will be on the road again on Friday when they tangle with Peabody/Burns in Peabody.
