STERLING – It was a close game from the opening tip to the final buzzer, unfortunately for the Moundridge boys’ basketball team someone has be the loser and they lost on Tuesday by just three-points, 59-56, on the road at Sterling.

After trailing by five, 21-16, at the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats bounced back and cut the Sterling lead to just one at 32-31 heading to the halftime break.

Coming out of the break the Wildcats gained as much as a six point lead in the third quarter and ended up in a 46-46 tie heading into the final eight minutes of play where Sterling flexed their athletic talent and smudged out to final three-point, 59-56 victory over the Wildcats.

“I am proud of our kids tonight,” noted Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his game reflections. “We got down early but then led by as many as six in the third quarter. We defended well and executed on the offensive end. We showed a lot of grit tonight in a game against a very talented and athletic Sterling team. No doubt this game helped us see what we can be yet this year.”

Looking at the stats you see just how even the game was as Moundridge hit on 52% of their shots from the field while Sterling connected on 53% though the host team held a seven-attempt advantage at the free throw line.

Individually, the Wildcats were also balanced on offense as four players hit for double digits on the night with Landon Kaufman having the team high of 17 while Corbin Unruh hit for 13, Daniel Kaufman chipped in with 12 and Brady Helms connected for 10. Landon Kaufman and Unruh each connected on three three-pointers as well.

Unruh, Helms and Jonathon Schlosser did the heavy work in the paint with each grabbing four rebounds while Helms had the most assists with four while blocking a pair of shots on defense.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE WILDCATS? The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-8 on the season as they now have a week off to prep to play host to Hutchinson Trinity Catholic on Tuesday, February 11.
