BRUMBAUGH HITS FOR 17!
HOISINGTON – After a sluggish first half left the Smoky Valley girls basketball team with a large deficit heading into the second half, they nearly pulled it off only to end up losing by one point late, 35-34, in a makeup game on the road at Hoisington on Thursday.
The Lady Vikings held a single point lead, 7-6 at the end of the first quarter only to hit some offensive ice in the second eight minutes of play where they only scored five points while Hoisington put 16 on the scoreboard to give Hoisington a comfortable 10-point, 22-12, advantage heading into the halftime break.
After both teams put 11 more points in the scorebook during the third quarter, Smoky Valley held Hoisington to just a pair of points in the final eight minutes of play but still came up just one point short in the 35-34 loss.
“The girls came up short in a comeback effort,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “Shooting woes led to a 22-12 halftime deficit and the margin was the same at the end of three but then the Lady Vikings mounted a fourth quarter comeback effort. We had a final possession down by one but missed a guarded shot in the lane in the final seconds of play.”
Junior guard, Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings with 17 points while sophomore Abby Rose chipped in with seven. Breanna Priddy supplied Smoky Valley with solid play in the paint as she hauled in nine rebounds.
As he concluded his game reflections, Coach Van Der Wege added, “This was a tough loss tonight because this was more about us than it was about Hoisington. We waited for two-and-a-half quarters to start playing and getting some defensive stops and taking care of the ball. We are really struggling to hit shots right now and we need to get more scoring help for Ellie (Brumbaugh). We want to have an inside/outside balance but have been struggling to have it lately.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY VIKINGS? Now just 4-10 for the season, the Lady Vikings close out their week with another road game on Friday at Larned.
