SHORT HANDED VIKINGS LOSE TO HOISINGTON

By William

HOISINGTON – Playing without two of their top players, the Smoky Valley boys basketball team kept their make-up road game at Hoisington close until the third quarter on Thursday before losing 51-33.

When illness keeps your top big guys, six-foot-four Matt Lucas and six-foot-three Haven Lysell-Stewart, off the court you would think the Vikings would collapse but they did not. In fact without the third quarter the Viking boys still may have lost the game but only by a total of four points instead of 18.

While Hoisington scored 11 points in each of the first two quarters, Smoky Valley tallied 10 in each quarter as well, leaving the Vikings just a pair of points, 22-20 behind heading into the halftime break.

Unfortunately, the offensive wheels came off in the third quarter when the Vikings could only manage a single point while Hoisington put up 15 to take a commanding 16 point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Vikings once again held their own in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 to the host teams 14, just not enough to nip away at the deficit and make the game look closer than the scoreboard may have been showing.

Where the big boys were missing proved to be a huge factor for the Vikings as they were outrebounded 25-9 for the game.

While six Vikings were able to get points in the scorebook, Trey Kennedy was the only one to reach double digits as he scored 11 which included two three-pointers. Karson Pihl, just a freshman, came close to double digits as a fill in for the missing big guns as he scored eight, one of which was a three-pointer.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE VIKING BOYS? The loss drops the Vikings to 4-10 for the season as they stay on the road Friday with a road trip to Larned.
