STRUBER, WESTBROOK, COLGIN TOP SCORERS!

CANTON – The Canton/Galva boys basketball team picked a big win for themselves on Friday as they pretty much lead from start to finish at home in an 11-point, 53-42 victory over Rural Vista.

Up by eight by the end of the first quarter, the Eagles pushed their lead out to 11 at 27-16 by the halftime break. Rural Vista came out of the break and nibbled away at the deficit to where the Eagles only held a seven-point, 36-29 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play where Canton/Galva dug in again and put four more points on their cushion to earn the final 53-42 win.

“We played a really good first half,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan in his reflections after the game. “We pressured the ball defensively and executed offensively. We were sloppy with the ball in the third quarter and didn’t rotate defensively on our press. I really thought our energy in the fourth quarter was the key to the game. Kinser (Colgin) did a great job denying their top scorer in the fourth and our help side defense was fantastic.”

The big man Coach Duncan was referring to was Cameron Campuzano who was a force to reckon with as he scored 22 of the Rural Vista’s 42 points while also gathering in 17 rebounds, blocking three shots, making a couple of steals and dishing out three assists.

Despite the score the game was evenly played out as both teams recorded 35 rebounds without having a whole bunch of turnovers on offense as the Eagles only gave the ball over times while Rural Vista turned it over 13.

For the Eagles, Tyson Struber recorded his sixth straight double-double by dropping in 17 points while pulling down 13 rebounds and still finding time to make five steals and two blocked shots. Xavier Westbrook also had a big game for the Eagles as he scored 14 points, pulled down six rebounds which included five on the offensive glass while also making three steals and dishing out three assists. Kinser Colgin also reached double digits in scoring with 10 while Brayden Collins recorded eight rebounds.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE EAGLES? With the victory the Eagles are now 5-9 for the season and will be back in action on Tuesday when they play on the road at Elyria Christian.
