BRUMBAUGH, PRIDDY LEAD SMOKY VALLEY!

By William

LARNED – Playing their fifth game in just eight days, the Smoky Valley girls basketball team traveled to Larned on Friday and still brought home a convincing 18-point, 45-27 victory.

After leading by just one point, 9-8, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Vikings put 10 more points on the board in the second stanza while holding Larned to just five to give Smoky Valley a six-point, 19-13 advantage going into the halftime break.

Smoky Valley came out in the second half and put 10 more points up in the third quarter before dropping in 16 in the final eight minutes of play while holding Larned to single digits in both quarters and just 14 overall to give the Lady Vikings the convincing 18-point win.

“My key for the girl’s tonight was ‘rebound’,” noted Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “That is literally rebound the basketball, especially on the defensive end. But also, rebound from Thursday night’s disappointing one-point loss. I was extremely proud of how our girls accomplished both. They played well in almost every facet of the game. While we still aren’t shooting as well as we need to inside, we did score the ball better than we have in a couple of weeks.”

Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 14 as nine girls put points by their name in the scorebook including Abby Rose and McKinley Johnson who both chipped in with six thanks to a pair of three-pointers by both. Breanna Priddy scored double digits in the paint by pulling down 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end of the court.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Our defensive intensity was impressive tonight, which was very good, especially coming at the end of five games in eight days. (Ellie) Brumbaugh continues to pace us but she had plenty of teammates step up and help in the scoring tonight.”

The Lady Vikings junior varsity team also scored an impressive win on Friday as they hammered Larned 43-13, making it a great night all around for Lady Viking basketball.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY VIKINGS? Now 5-9 for the season overall and 1-3 in league play, the Lady Vikings will return to the competitive hardwood on Tuesday when they take a road trip to Lyons on Tuesday.

The Lady Vikings junior varsity will compete at home in a junior varsity tournament on Monday before they go to Lyons on Tuesday.
