KENNEDY HITS FOR 23, 5 3-POINTERS!
LARNED – Playing for the second game in a row without their two big men, the Smoky Valley boys basketball team had quality first and fourth quarters only to let offensive woes in the middle two stanza’s cost the Vikings a road game on Friday at Larned where they lost by 16, 69-53.
Despite playing for the second time without Matt Lucas and Haven Lysell-Stewart, the Viking’s two six-foot-plus players, Smoky Valley was still able to jump out to a seven-point, 18-11 lead by the end of the first quarter only to stumble offensively in the second quarter by scoring just five points while Larned poured in 21 to allow the hosts to take a 32-23 advantage over the Vikings into the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, the Vikings were only able to score a single digit nine points while Larned dropped in another 18 points to take a commanding 18-point, 50-32 lead into the final eight minutes to play. Smoky Valley was able to outscore Larned in the final quarter but only by a pair of points, sealing the loss.
Trey Kennedy had a huge night to lead the Vikings as he connected on five three-pointers on his way to a game high 23 points. No other Viking hit for more than six.
Cade Schneider had the team high for rebounds with six while Bruster Bengtson pulled in five, three of which were on the offensive end of the court.
As team the Viking shot 36% from the field which was low compared to Larned who spent the game shooting a white hot 60%, including 50% from beyond the three-point line.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SMOKY VALLEY VIKINGS? With the loss the Vikings drop to 4-11 for the season as they get ready for a road trip on Tuesday to Lyons.
