BERGKAMP LEADS LITTLE RIVER IN SCORING!
By William
LITTLE RIVER – A night of consistent play by the Little River girls’ basketball team played out in a strong second half and a final 18-point, 42-24 victory over Goessel at home on Friday.
The Lady Redskins held a good six-point, 9-3 advantage over visiting Goessel by the end of the first quarter and then extended the lead out to nine at 16-7 by the time they reached the halftime break.
Little River came out in the third and pushed the lead out to double the visitors score at 32-16 heading into the final eight minutes of play where the Lady Redskins cruised on in for the final 18-point win.
“Great defensive game tonight by the girls,” exclaimed Lady Redskins Head Coach Trey Look during his game reflections. “I thought our effort on defense was much better tonight. Our focus and discipline were key. That is something we talked about the past couple of days and it showed at both ends.”
It was a huge night on the boards for the Lady Redskins as they collected 30 rebounds with 16 of those on the offensive end of the court, giving Little River many opportunities for second chance points.
Jaylie Bergkamp led the Lady Redskins in scoring with 12. Emma McBride chipped in with eight as Little River had 10 Lady Redskins put at least a pair of points by their name in the scorebook. Bergkamp and Morgan Konen each pulled down a team high five rebounds while Mekenzie Renken dished out three assists and Emma McBride made four steals.
Coach Look concluded his reflections by adding, “Jaylie (Bergkamp) had a great game offensively that got us going early in the game. They really keyed on our bigs inside and I thought our guards really stepped up especially in the second half of knocking down some shots. Proud of the girls tonight as now we prepare for a very busy week.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LITTLE RIVER LADY REDSKINS? With their victory, the Lady Redskins now move to one win over .500 at 7-6 for the season. The Little River girls will be extremely busy next week as they will travel to Elyria for a makeup game with the Elyria Christian Lady Eagles on Monday, host Wakefield on Tuesday, then have another makeup game on Thursday with Centre before closing out the week on Friday with a road trip to Solomon.
