ELYRIA – A seemingly steady offense helped propel the Elyria Christian boys’ basketball team to a 14-point, 49-35 victory over cross-county rival Canton/Galva at home on Tuesday.

The Elyria Eagles jumped out to a six-point, 16-10 advantage by the end of the first quarter before Canton/Galva was able to nip one-point off the lead by halftime at 25-20.

Elyria came out in the second half and put 14 points up in the third quarter and another 10 in the final eight minutes of play while holding Canton/Galva to just 15 total points in earning the 14-point victory.

“It was nice to see the boys put together a complete game tonight against a tough, physical, well-coached Canton/Galva team,” noted Elyria Christian Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “We were able to get out to a much better start then we did last night against Little River which helped us to not be so tight and to see more shots go in during the first half.”

“Elyria shot very well in the first quarter,” explained Canton/Galva Head Coach Shane Duncan. “I felt we kept them out of the lane in the second quarter and did a better job on the defensive glass.”

Both teams hit 39% of their overall shots from the field with Elyria Christian dropping in eight-of-ten free throws to make a difference on the scoreboard while Canton/Galva only hit on one free throw for the game. The biggest gap between the two teams for the game was turnovers where Canton/Galva turned the ball over 17 times while Elyria Christian only gave the ball up on turnovers eight times.

Tyson Struber was the lone Canton/Galva Eagle to reach double digits in the scorebook with 14 while Brayden Minson just missed by chipping in nine. Kinser Colgin topped the team on the glass with six rebounds with Minson and Xavier Westbrook each pulling down five.

For Elyria Christian, Zach Stucky and Jackson Stone led the team in scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively. Gage Schneider had control in the paint with eight rebounds while Stone pulled down six and Stucky topped the team in assists with four.

Elyria Christian Coach Goodrich concluded his game reflections by saying, “Zach (Stucky) and Jackson (Stone) were productive for us from the field and I was also pleased with our free throw shooting as well as our rebounding efforts. Gage (Schneider) continues to rebound extremely well for us by pulling down eight tonight and has also been very consistent on both ends of the floor these last few games.”

Canton/Galva Coach Duncan finished his reflections by adding, “We had too many unforced turnovers in the second half. They got to the 50/50 balls, and it seemed as though they scored off all of them.”

Canton/Galva avoided a complete shutout for the evening by taking a close, hard fought, three-point, 30-27 victory over Elyria Christian in the junior varsity game.
