GOESSEL – Playing a makeup road game on Thursday at Goessel, the Canton/Galva girls basketball team held off an attempt of a comeback late by Goessel and scored a 17-point, 43-26 victory.

After holding just a three-point, 5-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles put 14 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter while holding Goessel to just four to gain a comfortable 13 point, 19-6 lead heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Canton/Galva once again held the host team to five points or less and opened their commanding advantage to 19 points at 30-11 at the end of the third quarter. Goessel did their best at a comeback by scoring more points, 15, in the fourth quarter than they had the whole previous three quarters, but the Lady Eagle were able to put 13 more on the board and earn the 17-point win.

“For the first three quarters the girls played as well defensively as we have all year,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Shelby Hoppes during his reflection on the game. “We contested their shots and limited their possessions by doing a great job on the defensive glass. We didn’t shoot a great percentage, but I felt like our shot selection was really good and shots came within the offense which is something we have been struggling with as of late.”

Neither team shot very well overall as the Lady Eagles hit on just 21% of their attempts and Goessel only made 23%. The big difference in the game according to the stats came in the paint where Canton/Galva dominated the boards, outrebounding Goessel 35-23, with 14 of those coming on the offensive end of the court to give the Lady Eagles second chance point opportunities.

Tia Moddelmog had an outstanding game, scoring 22 points while just missing a double-double as she pulled down nine rebounds while also getting three steals and a blocked shot.

Coach Hoppes concluded his game reflections by adding, “Tia (Moddelmog) played really well tonight, leading us in scoring and rebounding. Now we have to move on from this one quickly as we host a much-improved Peabody/Burns team tomorrow night.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY EAGLES? With the victory the Lady Eagles even their season record at .500 at 8-8. They now have a quick turnaround with a game on Friday at home when they host Peabody/Burns on senior night.
