BELL, MODDELMOG TOP SCORERS, MODDELMOG GETS DOUBLE-DOUBLE!
CANTON – From the opening tip the Canton/Galva girls’ basketball team seemed to overwhelm the visitors from Peabody/Burns as they scored a runaway 30-point, 53-23 home victory on Friday.
The Lady Eagles ran out to a 10-point, 13-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and then put another 16 on the scoreboard in the second quarter while holding Peabody/Burns to just six to take a commanding 20-point, 29-9 lead into the halftime break.
In the final two quarters, the Lady Eagles put another 24 points in the scorebook while holding the visitors to just 14 on their way to the huge 30-point win.
“Collectively as a team tonight I thought we played one of our best games,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Shelby Hoppes while sharing his reflections of the game. “Every girl contributed in one way or another. We rebounded well at both ends and took care of the basketball which is something we have really been working on. I was also very pleased with our energy which was a concern with this being our third game in four days.”
Although neither team hit better than 27% from the field, the Lady Eagles took 21 more shots than Peabody/Burns and made nine of those. Canton/Galva also outrebounded the visitors by 11, 34-23 with 18 of those grabs coming on the offensive end of the court which meant many second chance point opportunities. Another big stat advantage for the Lady Eagles came with their defense forcing Peabody/Burns into making 26 turnovers while they committed just nine themselves.
Alexa Bell had a big game offensively as she put 18 points in the scorebook while Tia Moddelmog recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Moddelmog also dished out four assists while also Bell recorded five steals on defense.
Coach Hoppes concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Now we need to continue to work hard every day and build on the success we’ve been having of late. Like every team, we want to be playing our best basketball in late February and going into March.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANTON/GALVA LADY EAGLES? With the victory the Lady Eagles now sit at one game over .500 for the season at 9-8. They now get a couple of days to rest as they prep for final week of the regular season with a home game on Tuesday when Centre comes to Canton.
