PRATT – As they finished up a four straight games on the road, the Smoky Valley girls’ basketball team came oh so close to getting a win only to lose on the road Friday to Pratt, 49-47, on a basket at the buzzer.

The Lady Vikings held a slim two-point, 13-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter before the Pratt managed to tie the game up at 19-19 heading into the halftime break.

After taking another very slim, one-point lead at 32-31 at the end of the third quarter, Smoky Valley’s Kerington Haxton hit a three-pointer with 17 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 47-47. After nearly getting a steal with six seconds left, Pratt called a timeout and on the inbounds play, the Lady Vikings forced a guarded shot that rimmed off only to have a Pratt player put the follow up into the basket as time ran out to give the home team the two-point victory.

“We are now 2-3 in the last two weeks and three of those losses have come by a combined six points,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “This one really hurt as I felt our girls played their most complete game. Pratt runs a lot of dribble weave to get their top two players free to either shoot the three or drive to the basket. (Ellie) Brumbaugh and her Lady Viking teammates were able to shut down one of those players for the most part but couldn’t contain the other. Anyone who watched saw that they made some unbelievable shots in the lane and managed to get to the foul line. We had some lapses at times, but overall, we played solid defense and balanced scoring on offense. We also outrebounded them but came up one defensive rebound short to get the game to overtime.”

Only five Lady Vikings put points in the scorebook for the game with Breanna Priddy leading the team by scoring 14 while also getting her second 15 rebound game to give her a double-double. Abby Rose also hit double digits with 10 as the Lady Vikings hit for seven three-pointers which were well spaced out as Rose, Brumbaugh and Kerington Haxton all had two.

When looking at the stat sheet, one of the keys to the possible loss may come from free throws as the Lady Vikings only connected on 50% of their 16 attempts.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his game reflections by saying, “Pratt got up 9-0 before we went on a 13-point run to start the game and then they were up five with a minute left in the first half and we tied it up. The girls continue to improve but unfortunately have come up short in recent games, despite the effort. (Breanna) Priddy and (Abby) Rose both gave us some scoring inside and (Ellie) Brumbaugh, (Kerington) Haxton and (McKinley) Johnson all hit some big shots. We have three big games coming up against state-ranked teams and will need these performances each night.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SMOKY VALLEY LADY VIKINGS? The loss drops the Lady Vikings to just 2-4 in league play and 6-11 overall. Next up will be on Tuesday when Smoky Valley plays host to Nickerson.
