MOUNDRIDGE – They lead them early and hung with them tough for the game, but in the end the Moundridge boys basketball team could not stop the big gun for unbeaten Berean Academy and ended up losing at home by 12, 53-41 on Friday evening.

The Wildcats surprised everyone and took a two-point, 12-10 lead to the pause at the end of the first quarter before Berean Academy doubled up on the Wildcats in scoring in the second quarter, 16-8, to overtake the lead and go into the halftime break with a six-point advantage.

While they hung tough with the Warriors in the final two quarters, the Wildcats were still outscored 27-21, resulting in the final 12-point loss.

“The kids played hard again tonight,’ explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “Five or six possessions decided this game and some of those were in the first half. We executed at both ends of the floor the way we wanted. Berean is a very good team with athletes at every position and good shooters.”

While the Wildcats shoot a respectable 42% overall from the field and 42% from beyond the three-point line, the Warriors connected on 54% of their shots from the field and an even 50% from beyond the arc. Other than that, neither team dominated in any one category on the stat sheet except for one player as the Warriors Chase Weibe seemed to be unstoppable as he poured in 29 points which included four three-pointers.

For Moundridge, Corbin Unruh led the team in scoring with 16 while Landon Kaufman joined him in double digits with 11 thanks to three three-pointers. Brady Helms had a solid game by chipping in seven points in the scorebook, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out a team leading four assists.

Coach Unrau concluded his reflections on the game by saying, “We have three more regular season games to build some momentum heading into substate. I really love how these guys play hard for each other and do what we ask of them. Still a lot to play for.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE MOUNDRIDGE WILDCATS? Dropping to 7-10 for the season with the loss, the Wildcats now focus on Tuesday when they will make a road trip to Ell-Saline.
