LINDSBORG – The Smoky Valley girls basketball team got behind in the first half and were unable to crawl out of the deficit hole on Tuesday as they lost by 17, 52-35, at home to Nickerson, the number five ranked team in Class 4A.

Nickerson jumped out to a quick 14-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended the advantage to 15 at 28-13 by the halftime break. Despite the Lady Vikings staying within one point, 13-12 and 11-10, of Nickerson in both the third and fourth quarters, it was not anywhere near enough to crawl back out of the deficit hole as they ended up losing by 17.

“The Lady Vikings battled throughout,” noted Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege as he reflected on the game. “Nickerson got out to a quick start. Nickerson is a better team than they were last year when they finished in the top four at state in Class 4A. We came out trying to defend the paint but gave up the three-ball to their guards. We adjusted our defense and from there, we played much more evenly. I was extremely proud of how we battled from start to finish. Nickerson has a very balanced team, both inside and outside, but outside of the first quarter, we showed that we do too.”

Ellie Brumbaugh and Breanna Priddy led the Lady Viking offense with 14 and 10 points respectively with four of Brumbaugh’s baskets coming from beyond the three-point line.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SMOKY VALLEY LADY VIKINGS? Due to the loss, the Lady Vikings drop to just 6-12 for the season. They will be back on the hardwood on Friday when they play host to Halstead.
