DURST, KAUFMAN, EICHELBERGER TOP MOUNDRIDGE SCORERS!

By William

BROOKVILLE – After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Moundridge girls’ basketball team righted the ship and pulled away from host Ell-Saline on Tuesday to score a 15-point, 54-39 road victory.

Ell-Saline held a slim, three-point, 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Lady Wildcats broke out for 16 second quarter points while holding Ell-Saline to just 11 and gain their own slim, two-point, 26-24 halftime lead.

The Lady Wildcats came out in the third quarter and put another 15 points on the scoreboard while holding Ell-Saline to under 10, giving them an eight-point, 41-33 advantage entering the final quarter of action. In the fourth quarter Moundridge once again held the host team to less than 10 points and cruised in for the final 15-point win.

“We started out in a zone and Ell-Saline hit four three-pointers,” explained Lady Wildcat Head Coach Vicky Kessler in her post-game reflections. “With that we switched to man and did a much better job containing their shooters. We were able to take the ball inside to Kate (Eichelberger) and Kourtney (Kaufman) was able to knock down some threes from the outside. Erin (Durst) did a nice job taking the ball to the basket, scoring 16 with several of those being layups. She was also eight-of-eleven from the free throw line.

Erin Durst led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16 while Kourtney Kaufman and Kate Eichelberger each scored 15. Kaufman ended the game with four three-pointers.

Under the basket, Eichelberger and Kenzie Elmore led Moundridge by grabbing eight and seven rebounds respectively. Kourtney Kaufman directed the offense and recorded five assists while Katie Stucky and Elmore each dished out three. On defense the Lady Wildcats were led by Erin Durst with three steals and Eichelberger who blocked four shots.

As a team, the biggest stat difference in the game came at the free throw line where the Lady Wildcats made 20-of-32 opportunities while Ell-Saline only went to the line seven times and made just two.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE MOUNDRIDGE LADY WILDCATS? With the victory the Lady Wildcats are within one win of an even .500 record for the season at 9-10. They will be back on the competitive court on Friday when they play host to Sedgwick.
