KLATT TOP LADY EAGLE SCORER!
CANTON – Despite taking an early lead, the Canton/Galva girls basketball team was unable to keep Centre from scoring while struggling in their offense in the middle two quarters and suffered a final 18-point, 54-36 loss at home on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a four-point 16-12 lead by the end of the first quarter only to struggle and score just four points in the second quarter while Centre put 10 on the board, giving the visitors a slim, two-point, 22-20 advantage going into the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, Canton/Galva again struggled on offense and only put five points on the board in the third quarter while Centre went hot and scored 19 to hold a commanding 16-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Despite playing Centre even in the final stanza, the Lady Eagles were unable to nibble away at the lead and ended up with the 18-point loss.
“We had to many defensive breakdowns tonight and that is on me to get the girls in position to be successful,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Shelby Hoppes during his reflections on the game. “They were hot from behind the arc and I needed to adjust sooner to try and take that away. I’m proud of the girls for showing some toughness, we fought till the very end and never gave up. Now we need to have a short memory and move on from this one.”
Carissa Klatt was the lone Lady Eagle to reach double digits as she led the team in scoring with 12 as all her scoring came on four made three-pointers while Tia Moddelmog chipped in with seven. With Canton/Galva outrebounding Centre 30-25 for the game, Emily Peterson and Moddelmog did the yeoman work under the boards with each collecting seven rebounds.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANTON/GALVA LADY EAGLES? The loss drops the Lady Eagles to an even 9-9 for the season as they now prep for the final two games of the regular season. The Lady Eagles play a home makeup game on Friday with Wakefield before closing out the regular season next Tuesday with a home game against the Wichita Warriors.
