CANTON – With the score tied after three quarters, the Canton/Galva boys’ basketball team found another offensive surge and pulled away in the final quarter to earn an eight-point, 45-37 victory on Friday in a makeup home game with Wakefield.

Wakefield had control in the first quarter and finished it out holding a slim three-point, 11-8, lead over the Eagles. In the second quarter the Eagles outscored Wakefield 14-9, giving them a two-point advantage on the scoreboard going into the halftime break.

After Wakefield tied the score at the end of the third quarter, the Eagle offense rose to the occasion and put 15 points in the scorebook in the final quarter of play to earn the final eight-point win.

“Wakefield did a great job of controlling the pace in the first quarter,” noted Eagle Head Coach Shane Duncan. “They were very patient and every time we had a defensive lapse, they would score. We did a much better job controlling the tempo in the second quarter as it was a very evenly played half. The boys played with great energy in the fourth quarter which I believe was the difference in the game. We got the 50/50 balls in the final five minutes, which is a credit to how hard they played.”

Xavier Westbrook led the Eagles in the scorebook with 13 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. Brayden Collins had another solid game despite only scoring six points as he dished out four assists, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two Wakefield shots. Kinser Colgin and Tyson Struber just missed double digits in the scorebook with nine points each.

Coach Duncan concluded his game reflections by saying, “Xavier (Westbrook) had a fantastic game for us. Snagging eight rebounds and attacking the rim at just five-foot-eight against players significantly taller really shows the heart he plays with. Once again though, it was another great team effort!”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANTON/GALVA EAGLES? With the win the Eagles are now 8-11 for the season and will close out the regular season on Tuesday when they play host to a solid Wichita Homeschool Warriors team.
