SCHNEIDER, KENNEDY, LUCAS TOP VIKING SCORERS!
LINDSBORG – The Smoky Valley boys basketball team held off a second half soring surge by Halstead to earn a five-point, 49-44 victory at home on Friday.
It was all Vikings in the first half as they bounced out to a nine-point, 15-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and then added a few points on to their advantage to take a 12-point, 30-18 advantage into the halftime break.
Halstead would not go away after the break as they outscored Smoky Valley 16-7 in the third quarter to pull back within three before the Vikings held off the Dragons in the final eight minutes of play to earn the five-point win.
The visitors outshot the Vikings for the game as Halstead hit on 40% of their shots from the field which included nine three pointers while the Vikings hit just 36% of their shots. Defensively was one difference being as the Vikings forced the Dragons into turning the ball over 16 times while they only miscued eight times.
While seven Vikings put points in the scorebook, only Cade Schneider was able to reach double digits as he scored 11 while Trey Kennedy just missed with nine and Matt Lucas chipped in with eight. It was a team effort on the boards as Schneider led the team with five rebounds and Bruster Bengtson, Ryan Heline and Lucas all grabbed four each.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SMOKY VALLEY VIKINGS? The victory gives the Vikings a 6-12 mark for the season as they prep for their final game of the 2019-20 regular season on Monday when Haven will come to Lindsborg to battle the Vikings.
