OPENS WITH 10 GAME JUNIOR VARSITY SCHEDULE!

By William

MCPHERSON – Did you know there is a new game in town? It’s called Lacrosse and thanks to the work of Virgil Lyon, McPherson will have a non-sanctioned Lacrosse team that will play a 10-game schedule of junior varsity games beginning this spring.

Lyon pointed out that the current schedule for the spring of 2020 is still in the process of nailing down some of the games since many of the teams in the Kansas City area do not even start scheduling until late February due to the fairly limited number of teams in the Kansas City area.

“We’re playing a junior varsity schedule this spring with a reasonably balanced stable of opponents,” explained Lyon. “The guys still look really green but they’re improving rapidly. The good news is that the entire roster is made up of freshman.”

Speaking of the young team, Lyon continued by saying, “Of course we’d be happy to have older kids, but our core group this year seems pretty committed to the team. We’ve got 12 players right now, but would like to get as close to 20 kids as possible.”

For those not familiar with the game of Lacrosse, it is the oldest organized sport in North America with its origins coming from a tribal game played by eastern Woodlands indigenous people as well as the Plain Indian Tribes. The game is set with two 10-member teams attempting to send a small ball into each other’s netted goal with each player equipped with a crosse or stick at the end of which is a netted pocket for catching, carrying, or throwing the ball.

Many of the games scheduled for the Bullpup Lacrosse team are in Kansas City at the beginning of the season though they will be playing a few games at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita.

Currently holding a 10-game schedule, Lyon is happy to point out that at the end of the season toward the end of April the Bullpup Lacrosse team will be hosting a post-season tournament.

Coach Lyon concluded his reflections on the new team and new season by adding, “Finally, we are hosting a post-season tournament here in McPherson at the Grant Field Complex. Teams will include Wichita (which comprises kids from Maize and Goddard High Schools), Olathe, Lawrence and McPherson. Eventually, we hope to see Andover come out, though Andover, McPherson, and the Wichita Knights are not yet playing in a league. This is the first-ever post-season opportunity for our kids.”

So, if you may be unable to make an out of town game, mark your schedule for Saturday, April 25 when the Bullpup Lacrosse team will host their first tournament here in McPherson.

Come watch the new sport in town with a new flurry of athletic talent and play. One thing for sure with the game of Lacrosse, it guarantees non-stop action.
