SMOKY VALLEY COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, RYAN TOP SCORER!

By William

HAVEN – Taking on the number two seed of their sub-state, the Smoky Valley girls basketball team could not afford any stumbles, but stumble they did in the third quarter and despite a valiant comeback their 2019-20 season ended on Monday when they lost to Haven, 37-26 at their Class 2A sub-state.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE LADY VIKINGS? The loss puts an end to rough 2019-20 season for the Smoky Valley Lady Vikings as they finish with a 6-15 record overall. Of the four seniors (Ashlyn Bryant, Macie Carlson, Zoe Grace and Kaylie Ryan) that closed out their Lady Viking careers with the loss, only Kaylie Ryan and Macie Carlson had a regular effect on the games meaning Smoky Valley has a lot to look forward to with next season as they will return players like Ellie Brumbaugh, Kerington Haxton, McKinley Johnson, Abby Rose, Breanna Priddy and Claire Broxterman.

THE GAME – Trailing by just two, 7-5, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Vikings tied Haven at 14-14 heading into the halftime break.

Unfortunately, Smoky Valley was held scoreless in the third quarter while Haven planted 17 points on the scoreboard to take a commanding 17-point, 31-14 advantage going into the final eight minutes of play. The Lady Vikings worked hard to get back in the game and doubled up on Haven in scoring during the fourth quarter, 12-6, but it was just not enough too late in the game as Haven ended their season with the 11-point loss.

THE COACHES REFLECTIONS – Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege had several reflections on the game when he said, “I know it sounds ridiculous, but tonight was the best offensive flow and movement that we’ve had all season. Unfortunately, we didn’t always hit the shots on the back end, especially in the third quarter. It wasn’t any one person, we just all went cold. In the fourth quarter we started hitting our shots again but by then it was too late. Our defense was solid once again, as holding a team like Have to just 37 points should be enough to win. Our girls battled hard to the end and I couldn’t be prouder of all of them.”

THE TEAM – Despite the low score, seven Lady Vikings put points in the scorebook with Kaylie Ryan closing out her Smoky Valley career by leading the team with eight points. Ellie Brumbaugh and Kerington Haxton each chipped in with five. Brumbaugh, Haxton and Abby Rose each hit one three-pointer.
