SALINA – They gave it a valiant attempt, but the comeback effort by the Canton/Galva girls basketball team on Monday in their Class 2A sub-state opening game came up four points short as they lost 55-51 to Salina Sacred Heart.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE LADY EAGLES? The loss means the Lady Eagles, who came into the sub-state as the number six see, finish the 2019-20 season with a 9-11 record and will be losing eight seniors. Salina Sacred Heart was the number three seed in the sub-state, and they will now play Bennington on Thursday in Herington while Chase County and Hillsboro will battle it out in the other semi-final for the Herington sub-state.

THE GAME – After being tied with Sacred Heart, 10-10, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles stumbled and only scored seven points in the second quarter while Sacred Heart poured 20 points into the scorebook to take a commanding 13-point, 30-17 advantage into the halftime break.

Canton/Galva nipped one point off the deficit in the third quarter before making the scorekeeper work hard in the fourth quarter by accounting for 22 points while holding Sacred Heart to just 14. The final quarter offensive explosion brought the Lady Eagles back to within four but not enough to gain a win and keep their season moving forward.

THE LADY EAGLES TEAM – Tia Moddelmog closed out her brilliant Lady Eagle career by recorded a huge double-double by putting 20 points in the scorebook and grabbing 10 rebounds. Junior Alexa Bell chipped in with 14 points while senior Carissa Klatt scored 10. Klatt also led the Lady Eagle in assists by dishing out four.

As a team the Lady Eagles actually connected on more shots from the field (20) than Sacred Heart did (18), but Sacred Heart went to the free throw line 14 more times than Canton/Galva did, connecting on 10 of those extra free throws which turned out to be the difference in the game.

WHAT COACH HOPPES HAD TO SAY – “I am so proud of this team tonight,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Shelby Hoppes after the game. “The girls executed on both ends of the floor and played with great effort and high energy all night. We played three of our best quarters of the year in this game. The difference ended up being a four-minute stretch late in the second quarter where we had to many mental breakdowns defensively which lead to runouts, and a 9-0 run for Sacred Heart. That run gave them a 13-point halftime lead, but the girls never gave up though and got it all the way back to three late in the fourth quarter with opportunities to tie but just couldn’t get over the hump.”

Coach Hoppes finished his reflections of the game and the season by adding, “I would like to thank my eight seniors for everything they have given to this program. They are a great group who showed up and just wanted to work at getting better. They made going to the gym everyday so enjoyable and I want to thank them for that as well as to congratulate them on great careers here at Canton/Galva.”
