GARRISON, ROLFS LED LITTLE RIVER SCORERS!
DODGE CITY – The Little River boys basketball kicked off their 2020 appearance at the Kansas Class 1A State Tournament with a solid 65-46 win over St. Francis on Wednesday afternoon.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE REDSKINS? It means the Redskins are now 23-3 for the season and one step closer to playing for a state championship.
Next up will come their semi-final battle with number three seed St. John/Hudson who beat Frankfort, 59-38 on Wednesday and will come into the game with an identical 23-3 mark for the season.
The upset of the day came in the other bracket of the Class 1A tournament as eighth-seed Stockton upset number one seed and previously unbeaten (25-0) Berean Academy, 38-33. Stockton is now 15-11 and will play in the other semi-final game on Friday against number five seed Coldwater/South Central (21-5) who defeated number four seed Lebo (22-4), 41-38
THE GAME – Little River opened the game up quickly with a 21-point first quarter to take a 10-point lead into the second quarter where they dominated again by outscoring St. Francis 15-8 to take a commanding 17-point advantage into the halftime break.
St. Francis found an offensive spark coming out of the break as they put 22 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter while Little River tried to keep up with 16. Despite the burst of offense by St. Francis, the Redskins still headed into the final eight minutes of play holding an 11-point lead.
St. Francis struggled with their offense in the final quarter, only scoring five points while Little River added 13 to their side of the scoreboard to earn the final 19-point victory.
THE REDSKINS AS A TEAM – Both teams had solid games shooting the ball as Little River connected on 27 of 49 shots from the field for 55% while St. Francis hit 21-of-40 for a 52% completion rate.
One of the big differences game beyond the three-point arc where the Redskins made nine three-pointers to only three by St. Francis. St. Francis also had more turnovers with 17 while Little River only committed 10.
Individually the Redskins were led by Jayden Garrison and Trey Rolfs as they both recorded 22 points by their names in the scorebook while Rylan Konen just missed joining them in double digits with nine.
Garrison just missed a double-double as he had a game high nine rebounds while also leading the team in assists with four. Rolfs had the quick hands on defense by making four steals.
