RICHARDSON PITCHES SHUTOUT!

MCPHERSON – The 16U Bullpups summer baseball team hit the diamond for four games on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6, and closed out the weekend with a victory, two losses and a tie.

They tied game one with Hutchinson on Friday before pounded Hutchinson in a rematch on Saturday while losing to the Wichita Rebels and Manhattan in the other two games.

Here is the game summaries as well as both individual and team stats from all four games:

GAME 1 – vs. Hutchinson, Friday, June 5 at Grant Complex:

The Bullpups 16U baseball team opened their four game stretch with a 10-10 tie against Hutchinson at Grant Complex in McPherson.

The 16U Pups scored four runs in both the first and second innings but were only able to score two more times in the final three innings while Hutchinson scored once in the first but then put across the plate three runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Owen Fetsch and Gunnar Schumacker led the Pups with three hits each while Hadlee Backhus also had a pair of hits as part of the 12 hits offensive attack. Fetsch also scored three times while both Luke Schroeder and Jaret Myers came across twice each. Fetsch also led the team in stolen bases with two.

The game was decided on the field as Hutchinson committed two errors while the Pups defense did not help the pitchers by making seven errors in the game.

On the mound, the 16U Pups used five different pitchers as Luke Schroeder went three innings giving up just two hits while surrendering four unearned runs and striking out three. Noah Bearley, Gavin Richardson, Treyton Pelnar and Owen Fetsch all worked less than an inning as they combined to give up just two other hits, three unearned runs, walking six and striking out five.

GAME 2 – vs. Wichita Rebels, Friday, June 5 at Grant Complex:

In the second game on Friday, the 16U Pups gave up three runs in the first and another four in the fifth as the Wichita Rebels hammered them 9-1. Once again it was a struggle on defense as the Pups gave up another four errors while on the field.

Owen Fetsch was the lone Pup to get more than one hit as he had two, including a double.

Gunnar Schumacher went four innings on the mound and gave up six hits and three earned runs before being pulled for Caden Burris and Treyton Pelnar in the final inning where they gave up four earned runs.

GAME 3 – vs. Hutchinson, Saturday, June 6 at Grant Complex:

In the first game on Saturday, the 16U Bullpups pounded Hutchinson to the tune of a 19-0 shutout victory with the help of a strong pitching performance by Gavin Richardson and Hutchinson committing seven errors on defense which evened out the four errors by the Pups.

Richardson was the star of the game as he pitched a complete game shutout while throwing 60 strikes among his 84 pitches. He also gave up just three hits and no runs while striking out four.

Offensively, the 16U Pups pounded across five runs in the first inning, added a run each in the fourth and fifth before pushing across a whopping 12 runs in the sixth for the 19-0 win.

Gavin Richardson helped his pitching performance by also hammering out three hits, scoring twice and knocking in four runs to led the offensive attack. Gunnar Schumacher and Treyton Pelnar each chipped in with a pair of hits while Pelnar and Jaret Myers each got credit for three runs batted in. Owen Fetsch was the lone Pup to get a double.

GAME 4 – vs. Manhattan, Saturday, June 6 at Grant Complex:

After hammering Hutchinson in their first game on Saturday, the 16U Bullpups closed out the weekend with a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to Manhattan.

Manhattan pushed across five runs in the first inning and added one more in the second and fourth innings while the Pups scored one each in the first, second and fifth innings before making a valiant attempt at earning a win with three runs in the seventh and falling just one run short.

Luke Schroeder, Gavin Richardson, and Treyton Pelnar each contributed a pair of hits in the gamve with Schroeder and Richardson getting a double and Pelnar hitting for a triple.

Owen Fetsch, Gunnar Schumacher and Luke Schroeder each went two innings on the mound for the Pups as they combined to give up just six hits, five earned runs, six walks and four strikeouts.
