MCPHERSON – With this profile of the People of Education in McPherson County – we focus on Brandon Simmelink, Principal of the Middle School for McPherson USD 418!

So many folks work hard at making the educating of our future generations work, that we feel it is important to know who they are and get to know a little bit about them, their job, their background and what makes them tick in making their work within their school district tick.

WHO IS BRADON SIMMELINK?

Brandon Simmelink just finished up his fourth year as the Principal of McPherson USD 418 Middle School after previously spending six years as the Assistant Principal and Activities Director.

Simmelink spent most of his childhood growing up in Valley Center, Kansas just outside and northwest of Wichita. While he was in high school his family moved to Racine, Wisconsin, and that his where graduated from Case High School in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, a suburb of Racine.

It was then that Simmelink returned to Kansas to continue his education at Bethany College where he also ran track.

His wife Lisa is a music teacher at Eisenhower Elementary in McPherson.

The Simmelink’s have two children:

  • Daughter Baylee just finished eight grade at McPherson Middle School
  • Son Bryant just finished fifth grade at Eisenhower Elementary School in McPherson.

When not working, Simmelink enjoys working in his yard and mowing.

On weekends he spends much of his time watching his kids doing something they are passionate about – playing soccer.

Simmelink does say that when he finds the time, he enjoys getting outdoors to do some hunting and traveling with his family.

WHAT DID BRANDON SIMMELINK DO BEFORE ARRIVING HERE?

As he previously stated, Simmelink attended and graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in Education.

Simmelink began his career in education as teacher for eight years at Mayberry Middle School in Wichita, Kansas before coming to McPherson to serve six years as the Assistant Principal and Activities Director at McPherson Middle School.

Looking for a change, Simmelink spent a year in Hesston, Kansas where he served as the Middle School Principal for Hesston USD 460 before having the opportunity to return to McPherson to become the Principal of McPherson Middle School for the past four years.

After graduating from Bethany College, Simmelink earned his master’s in school leadership from Baker University and is currently working on getting his District Level Licensure from Wichita State University.

WHAT DOES BRANDON SIMMELINK’S CURRENT POSITION REQUIRE OF HIM?

According to Simmelink, his position as principal for the middle school makes him responsible for many areas including instructional leadership, budgeting, professional development, and daily operations.

He also points out that part of the job includes connecting with and building relationships with the school community and the community itself.

While not one of his favorite duties as principal, Simmelink admits that he is also there to assist in covering student behavior situations.

WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR THE CURRENT AND FUTURE OF MCPHERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL (in the words of Brandon Simmelink)?

While not directly saying what he sees as the current and future of the middle school, Simmelink did point out a few things which he says is important to both.

When it comes to combining the goals and relationships of all he works with, Simmelink points out that, “I love connecting with our staff, students, families and the entire McPherson community. We have a school full of outstanding kids that is always being fully supportive by the school community.”

Simmelink notes that one of his main goals daily is to, “Be supportive of both the students and teachers as they each find success in and out of the classroom.”

What does Simmelink find most rewarding about his career and working at McPherson Middle School, “It is so rewarding to see our teachers, staff, and families coming together to support the success of all our students.”

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR BRANDON SIMMELINK?

When looking to the future for himself as well as the middle school itself, Simmelink concluded his comments by saying, “I look forward to continuing to work with the staff, students and families at McPherson Middle School as we continue to focus in on our school vision for our students to be ‘future ready through balanced personal learning’.
