RIGHT OF WAY AT FOUR WAY STOP INTERSECTIONS!!

Traffic Stop Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department

This Tuesday they are talking about ‘RIGHT OF WAY’.

June is NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH!

Today, ‘Traffic Stop Tuesday’ is going to discuss VEHICLE APPROACHING OR ENTERING INTERSECTION and THE RIGHT OF WAY RULE!

Have you ever come to a stop at a four-way intersection at approximately the same time as another driver, and you were unsure who should proceed first?

This week’s Traffic Stop Tuesday addresses that very issue.

According to Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO), Sec. 57 on Vehicles Approaching or Entering an Intersection:

  • When 2 vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.
  • In the illustration that is provided – vehicle B should yield to vehicle A since vehicle A is to the right of vehicle B.

Hopefully, next time you encounter this situation you will not be left sitting at the intersection.

Sometimes, there are vehicles stopped in all four positions which can make things a bit more confusing.

When in doubt about who should proceed, for safety sake, be courteous and just wait!

Please continue to drive safely and have a great week!
